Bad comparison. Sonic has had so many different interpretations over the year, that there isn't a single canon "Japanese" concept that was washed away. Fuck, unless you think the manga where Sonic was an alternate superhero ego to "Nikky" is what Sonic should've always been (and I'm sure some snark will chime in and say yes). There were multiple canons being developed across the board in different continents. Japan, US, and Europe. And many of these elements later blended together. "Classic" Sonic's design sure as shit isn't pure Japanese.
