It's great. Not a hack and slash, proper soulslike combat most reminiscent of Bloodborne but by no means a copy. It is 'linear' like Darksouls 3 where you are mostly going through a series of areas but each one is pretty large and loops back on itself a few times. The variety and complexity of enemies is far beyond what Fromsoft does, barely any reuse of enemy types between levels. Several cases of a unique non-boss enemy appearing just once to make a cool encounter. Same for weapon variety, each weapon has its own unique moveset, plus they are divided into blade & handle which can be mix-and-matched to combine the reach/weight of one weapon with the moveset of another. Defensive options are also more varied, you naturally end up dodging, blocking, and parrying (perfectly timed block) in equal measure.
Lies of P feels like the first time any developer (including Fromsoft) has held a magnifying glass to the genre and put deliberate thought into what works and what could be improved. In most cases (including Fromsoft) things are copied without any thought or changed just for the sake of being different. You can tell just from navigating the menus that the developers put thought into every little detail.
