It's grainy but that's better than smoothed pics. Human brain can imagine some extra details from the noise... that's why old analog photos often look "sharp" even when they are not.
As to old cameras, it depends. Small pocketable point and shoot ones will not be any better. If anything there will be even less control over the image then what you get from cellphone. But older "prosumer" DSLRs might be good option. You can always google some images from exact model to see how they look. If you are lucky you can pick a nice kit for cheap...

I know, trust me. It gets quite obvious when I'm editing these photos and they are all the same. I will have some sitting in the grass and stuff like that. I also tried more poses leaning against the tree but it was meh (shot it against the sun, stupid mistake).
I want to do something else, but when I'm at this location I can only do so much. I would like to do something new, more interesting, but main problem is "where".
