We have cars. We have a shitton of cars. Even in civilized places where the public transport is working fine, it's proper not to trust it too much (and in some places, like Germany, it's decaying like crazy). From what I got one of the basic differences is that most Euro cities weren't built with cars in mind (despite adaptations during the postwar era) so it's kind of normal to walk around there, where American cities are built to be accessible almost only by car. Like, American social spaces were malls (before your social economy collapsed), European social places are town squares.
