The writer of Disco Elysium himself said that he failed at the book swindle, so he decided to try to fail at the gaming swindle next. But the writing in that game is still top tier compared to other videogames and the writer is also the lead designer. Usually writing is not a main focus, more like an afterthought, and I don't think most videogame writing is done by failed novelists or Hollywood script writers. More like by failed engineers or other idea guys. The standard is so low and the consumers are mostly perfectly happy with that, so it doesn't matter commercially.
