Do 1st-worlders really see things happening around them and suffer through many ordeals while they are like, "this is all gratuitious and for nothing because there is no God, no miracles, no plans, and nothing watching for me"? This sounds depressing.

The chinese constantly do it. The brazilians also do it. Since we have a magical understanding of reality (just read a romance from Gabriel García Márquez or other latino authors, that is exactly how we see life - magical realism), we constantly try to endanger ourselves toying with entities of this world and outside to achieve goals.
Brazilians do seem to understand the work of outer gods as the outline to all creation and providence. Unfortunately, some people exploit this as ignorance and pretend to be prophets for money.
It is just really strange how through all of humanity and all of history, people accepted the supernatural. Now, suddenly, a portion of the 1st-world decided that because they hate themselves and hate life, science now needs to prove every experience they go through until it becomes vapid and devoid of all meaning.
