A few years back, I bought this decrepit Buck Rogers book at a yard sale.

The weapon designs in Buck Rogers & Flash Gordon are hilariously bad. I kinda like em.

This book is "THE PLANETOID PLOT."
As you can see from the back cover teaser, Buck has a tomboy adventure-girlfriend who gets herself into trouble.
It was illustrated by a US Army veteran.
So you see, /ak/ threads already existed even as early as the 1920's...
