I think it's because they know that Hughes probably wants out unless they start winning, so they are basically just going all-in in order to try to keep him in Vancouver. This means:
-praying that Demko is actually fully recovered like he said he is and won't get injured again
-praying that Pettersson is actually fully recovered like he said he is and can be a 100+ point player again
-praying that nobody so much as sneezes in the direction of Chytil so he doesn't get another concussion
-praying that their prospects in Willander and Lekkerimäki are NHL ready in the next year or 2
-praying that Boeser can score 40 goals again now that he got the monkey off his back that was signing a new contract
-praying that Kane isn't a shithead on the ice because he does actually have decent offensive potential
-praying that guys like Hoglander, Debrusk, and Garland at the very least don't regress, and at best can elevate themselves by 10-20 points compared to last season
-praying that there are more Pettersson's out there they can sign so that way the commentators are always confused
