Adding "or pick any other spell that you deem thematically appropriate" beneath the extended spell list features of classes would really go a long way. You can of course always just ask the dm, but to be given permission by the game itself would make it feel more sanctioned and alright. Other examples include Tempest cleric not having access to lightning bolt or chain lightning.
