Why does engine rpm increase when going down a gear and decrease when going up a gear? I understand all that stuff about torque and gear ratios, but what is confusing me is that the gears change the speed of the output shaft, not the input shaft, right? So the speed of the transmission is changing because of the change in gear ratios, but why does it also change the speed of the engine? Idk if I am making myself clear.
