Elite is a mile wide but an inch deep. It has a bunch of flaws but at it's core it is comfy to fly your space ship around.
One example of something retarded: there is a type of soft war going on in the game called "power play" where you can help an npc faction expand its territory via a variety of activities. However you can't really directly interact with the opposing players. While it's possible to intercept enemy cargo ships in open mode to stop them from transporting the things to the places, NOTHING stops players from playing in "solo mode" or private care bear groups. Everything done in solo mode has equivalent impact compared to people who put themselves at risk of encountering hostile players. As a result the transport meta is just to run completely unarmed cargo ships that have stripped out all defenses and secondary systems in favor of more cargo capacity. There is no need to work coordinate with allied combat players to fly escort missions. No need to configure a ship into a blockade runner that sacrifices capacity to become fast enough and tough enough to withstand interdiction attempts. It's sad because the game COULD be much better. But suggest ways to improve player engagement and the legions of carebear forum dads will burn you at the stake.
Retardation aside, it can be cathartic to haul cargo around or fly around in an asteroid belt looking for motherload rocks to break open.
Fwiw, I support Senator Zemina Torval in the power play war because she pisses off the plebbitors with her pro-slavery ethics. Although if you read the fine print she's opposed to chattel slavery and instead supports a type of indentured servitude where the it's actually a mark of pride for the aristocracy to provide quality living conditions to the servants. Especially if it makes their political rivals look cheap in comparison. The plebbitors never read about imperial culture though. They just see the slave word and seethe.
