My locals died after people realized its one dogshit broken format with a few metafags dominating every weekend after broken format.
All it took was people from a halfway across the country to join us to farm rewards with 1000$ decks.
Consistent 20 man local died completely after tear->kash->snake-eye for a year ->fiendsmithcharmy
Some people myself included spent an insane amount of money to "keep up" which contributed to the downfall of the community at the end...
It's heartbreaking.
People really ended up moving on for good which is even more shocking. As in, no more in person play, some play master duel, some play joey power of chaos.

The issue is with these games unless you are bound by the heavy chains of nostalgia, once you take a "break" it becomes insanely hard to justify returning.
Imagine skipping 3 sets in shadoba and then having to return with no resources.
Not to mention the cost of "learning", sitting down looking over the past 3 sets of cards and meta to get a decent grasp.
Shadoba is a simple game so this is rather easy, but still, it's a barrier.

If you are old (30~ or above) you'll likely no longer entertain a return. There is fun to be had elsewhere, time better spent.
This is why I REALLY don't want to leave and break the habit.
It would kill me to see shadoba being good after I quit only to know that rejoining is a retarded idea.

Let's say you have an above average winrate, and you can get packs by paying effectively 200 rupies on average through take 2. You still only get enough rupies to do 1-2 runs a day.
If you were willing to pay, then it's only worth it if you can consistently get 6 or 7 wins every single time, since a daily pack is 50 crystals anyways.
They've made a mode that the paypigs won't play because it has a pretty high skill ceiling and a diverse set of skill requirements, while not rewarding anything exclusive (cosmetics, etc), and the Non-whales don't really want to play it either because the barrier of entry is too high, and rewards aren't worth it for most people (alongside aforementioned skill requirements). Yeah, I know YOU can probably average 3-4 wins and gain rupies from the mode, anon. It's all ultra-rendered, obviously-digital art now. The idea of digitally emulating markers or watercolors (nevermind using the real things) for illustration is kind of dead. Dragon's mechanics themselves have synergy, so it makes sense to make hybrid decks for it from a design perspective, if there's card support in there. Ramp has a lot of bricks and high cost cards, discard can turn bricks into something useful. It would be pretty easy for a designer to make cards that would encourage hybrid decks. If there's no synergy between a class's mechanics, then the only time they get hybrid decks is when they get dishonest overstatted "do everything" cards.
