Interestingly, in Ancient Greek they had a similar phenomenon where the word for “grain” (σῖτος) became the general word for food/meal. Just like how rice was so fundamental to the Japanese diet that the word for the grain itself (米) evolved into the broader concept of a meal (飯)
There are even theories that civilization could not exist without grain agriculture, as the surplus food production allowed for specialization of labor, cities, writing systems, etc. So it makes sense that these staple grains would become so linguistically dominant that they subsume the entire concept of “food” itself.
