It has nothing to do with wealth. Indians have been wearing these type clothes since the time of the British. Indians look bad in them these days because of the shitty slim fit trend that has been popular for the past 15 or so years.
Slim fit makes everyone look like shit and poor (like you're wearing old clothes because you're too poor to buy new ones that actually fit you and drape properly on your body), especially if you're skinny fat with a protruding gut, which is a lot of Indian men these days.
