I think the issue is they've always sort of been touch and go on if a Yoshi is THE Yoshi. It's an entire race that has a sort of tie to Mario and Luigi but is sometimes a thoughtless animal they enjoy the company of and sometimes a thinking talking person. The one that might have been the one to carry the Mario Bros is the chief (maybe) but that's never really developed on and he was shown as a distinct Yoshi from the one always used in the side games.
Unlike your examples they can't really make a singular Yoshi world, the games have always been a sort of rotating cast and they have to use that moving forward they can do something with this if they really fix on the group power sort of thing. Collecting yoshis to meet a goal, the more yoshis in a herd the more powerful you get and more ways you can fight and interact with an environment.
It's that or they make a completely new Central Yoshi like Captain Toad to be the focus of the games and that could be hit or miss
