Since this wonderful thread is still up, how would you think a 3D Yoshi game would work? Kirby and the Forgotten Land has shown that taking a character who has the ability to infinitely float can move to 3D by adding a height limit and max duration on floating until you have to touch the ground. With Yoshi, the timing is more precise to flutter jump infinitely than Kirby, so I think the simplest solution would be to make Yoshi able to flutter a certain amount of times until you're forced to land, 3 for example. As for the actual game part, would you prefer linear level design or large open areas like Odyssey and Bananza? Would the games keep the standard 5 flowers and 20 red coins to collect, or would you want to see a new form of collectible to account for the game being 3D, or even drop the collectibles in favor of something else?

I think focusing on the momentum is the main thing. Yoshi's Island's greatest strength was how well everything flows into everything else; you always carry momentum while throwing, aiming, flutterjumping, eating enemies, etc. A new yoshi game should feel like a higher-budget version of all those indie platformers that center around a grappling hook, like The Big Catch.

I don't enjoy the Odyssey/Bananza style of collectathon. There's just too much crap everywhere. Something more linear like Rayman 2 or at most something like Conker's Bad Fur Day which has both more open segments and segments which are more like linear levels is more fun and more focused. I'm more concerned with how throwing eggs would work in 3D than the flutter mechanic. I wouldn't want it to be in first person or feel like a shooter in any way and I feel full analog movement would push the game in that direction. I think the issue is they've always sort of been touch and go on if a Yoshi is THE Yoshi. It's an entire race that has a sort of tie to Mario and Luigi but is sometimes a thoughtless animal they enjoy the company of and sometimes a thinking talking person. The one that might have been the one to carry the Mario Bros is the chief (maybe) but that's never really developed on and he was shown as a distinct Yoshi from the one always used in the side games.
Unlike your examples they can't really make a singular Yoshi world, the games have always been a sort of rotating cast and they have to use that moving forward they can do something with this if they really fix on the group power sort of thing. Collecting yoshis to meet a goal, the more yoshis in a herd the more powerful you get and more ways you can fight and interact with an environment.
It's that or they make a completely new Central Yoshi like Captain Toad to be the focus of the games and that could be hit or miss

I had an idea that each of the main four Yoshis from SMW could have their own design and personality.
