Asus's cards put in a little read out in their GPU Tweak III software that warns about unstable voltages/or in other words a bad cable that is not playing nice with the card. It can be the cables themselves or a bad connection itself. But this would theoretically pick it up before a disaster happens and your connectors melt. I know it works because it's sensitive and does easily show a warning if you were to use some custom cable mod or something.
