This week in history:
July 6, 1938 – The Évian Conference opens on July 6, 1938, discussing Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Most countries refuse to accept more Jews.
July 7, 1942 – Jews of Rovno (Rivne, Ukraine) are rounded up and later massacred at Sosenki forest by German forces.
July 8, 1941 – Lviv pogrom ends with estimates of 4,000–7,000 Jews murdered by Ukrainian nationalists and German Einsatzgruppen.
July 9, 1941 – Białystok massacres: Daluege addressed policemen gathered at the city stadium, emphasizing their role in the mission to destroy Bolshevism. He declared their campaign as crucial, stating, "No other campaign is as important as yours. Now Bolshevism will finally be eradicated, for the greater good of Germany, Europe, and the entire world."
July 10, 1941 – The Jedwabne massacre: where hundreds (estimates range from 300 to 1,600) Jews are burned alive in a barn by local Poles under German supervision.
July 11, 1942 – "Black Sabbath" takes place in Salonika, occupied Greece. 9,000 Jewish males from the ages of 18-45 are forcibly assembled at Liberty Square in the center of the city. While they wait standing, they are forced to adopt squatting positions and beaten if they fell over. About 2,000 are sent to do forced labor for the German Nazi regime.
July 12, 1941 – Słonim Ghetto: German units and local collaborators begin conducting a major pogrom, killing several hundred Jews in the first wave of mass executions.
