you (don't technically) need the laa exe but (you should get it and) gog might come with it
you can automate almost everything in hoi3 while you learn the game if you want and most players leave some things automated forever but the game really isn't that hard to play

under each army group is 3 armies
under each army is 5 corps

ill dismantle the eastern theatre since i wont have anything to do there for a long time, and when i do ill probably be drowning in units so i can easily spawn a brand new theatre out of thin air
when i win the winter war i will be taking army group finland and replacing the 2 infantry armies with mot and arm as well and be using that army group for counterattacking germany

regarding oob levels and skill, theatre reduces the stacking penalty which you should never suffer from anyway, army group reduces supply consumption which is huge, army increases org which is ok, corps improves reinforce chance which becomes obsolete with tech, and division directly increases combat ability which is massive
it might seem counter intuitive but you generally want your best leaders at the division level and some decent ones at army group then traits at other levels because they do filter down albeit diluted
that ratio is bad but int+cas is a typical choice - it's leadership light and only uses one type of practicals
you need more int than that because you're fighting the entire german airforce and frankly you should lose that against a human unless britain is also a human
other wings are basically useless without int superiority
cas is worse than tac at bombing soft targets and it can't strategic bomb at all but it is decently rounded against land targets and even doubles as effective nav in inland seas
in europe you shouldn't struggle with basing but if you intend to blob china and the middle east you will find yourself hopelessly out of range at least until drop tanks
do not mix units within wings - the stacking penalty is prohibitive
ftr is similarly a waste of time because in any scenario where you might want it you should just be making int instead

I think the main reason why imperator failed was because here's just not enough interest in antiquity, people literally only care about rome and greece. Total war rome works because its main focus is the romans, one of the best things about paradox games is how many different campaigns you can have between nations, but people really only know about the romans and greeks, they might be able to name other civilizations, but know nothing beyond that. with games like hoi4 or vicky you can easily identify nations, their culture, their religion, and probably their history too. It doesnt help that half of the nations in imperator are made up because of how scarce sources from the time period are. The game being dog shit on launch certainly didnt help, but its not like vic3 was good on launch either and look at how popular it still is.

finished my first imperator campaign
it was fun, the macedonian mission tree was underwhelming, I expected it to center around reconquering alexander's empire but it was about some boring shit with greece I already forgot about, after that I got generic generated "conquer/expand X region" missions and I stopped paying attention to them
the game is surprisingly simple mechanically, it looks really daunting at first, but after a while you learn the simple mechanics and realize there's really one or two ways to react to things, like if a character is disloyal you just bribe/give free hands or bring them to trial. I feel like I know 90% of what I need to from my first campaign, which I never felt with any other paradox game.
my biggest gripes come from managing a big empire. You can't really manage multiple provinces as one, you can only manage each individual province one-by-one, which is super annoying when you want to do things like change the policy of multiple areas, set automatic trade, or fix something after your governor just decides to do whatever the fuck, and you need to change them every single time a governor dies/becomes disloyal. After I had enough legions I stopped caring about religious/cultural assimilation because it was too much of a pain in the ass. Rebellions were really annoying too, it felt like there was basically nothing I could do and they spawned left and right, no matter my stability or how much I change their happiness. Disloyal characters were a nothingburger, every now and then I'd see the civil war notification and bribing one or two characters or bringing them to trial made it fuck off
I don't think I'll do another campaign anytime soon, from what I've seen, campaigns don't have the unpredictable chaos of CK3 nor do nations have the very different playstyles of EU4.
I think its worth trying if you give enough of a shit about at least one specific ancient civilization

Just gave GFM a try and holy shit - even ignoring the bloat that makes Grandi look the picture of innocence - GPs basically have free reign to do whatever they want with no repercussions and the AI just gobbles up random states in random wars while constantly white peacing event wars: the Crimean War only ever lasts a couple of months before Russia concedes, the ACW usually results in a free CSA, half the time the USA white peaces the American-Mexican War, Russia peaces out with either the Polish or Lithuanian event revolt that spends the rest of the campaign jutting into Russia. But then you look over and Germany has taken ugly chunks out of all its neighbours, Russia has blobbed into China, Hungary is free (because it's easier for the AI than actually fighting the Hungarian Revolution) and has eaten half of Romania, Greece has blobbed into Bulgaria, Italy has taken chunks out of France.
I've zoomed through 3 campaigns most of the way and another two for a few decades and I have not seen a single "normal" outcome in Europe and only one in North America. What an absolute fucking mess.

An easy way to visualize and understand the EU4 trade system is to imagine nations as grabblers and trade nodes as gold piles they are stretching their hands out to grab gold from.
They can only reach out to their home node and one node upstream from that one so if you lock that node out of any kind of money you can keep it all in your own grabbler hands, otherwise you'll have hands all over your money pile.

with that out of the way trade in eu4 is a lot of experimentation on what works better or worse. sometimes it is worth collecting with a merchant, sometimes not, it all depends on the current situation; sometimes you can even collect from trade in a node where you don't own any land if it's late game and you have enough light ships. me, i learned it from watching arumba and consider meself pretty good at it yet i still can't put into a flowchart how to maximize your trade profits
