It's east 2, it's sanmenchan, it's got decent value, so I should probably riichi this. If it deals in, it's unfortunate, but we stand to gain a lot from it too.
The problem is that it's a high variance play. Sure, my lead right now is minuscule and it's East 2, but in the unlucky event where I deal into toimen's big hand, I drop into 4th place and have to fight hard once more to avoid a 4th place finish. Whereas a toimen tsumo or ryuukyoku doesn't harm my overall standing that much comparatively.
That made me hesitate and consider 8s mawashi as a lower variance option. I've grown to fold/mawashi in spots where I can hopefully rely on some shitter on the table to fuck up even bigger at some point anyway, so avoiding high variance plays like these has turned out to be a valid option. Here all players were competent though.
4p ends up dealing into a mangan and sending me into a 4th place spiral downwards that I fail to recover from. It's the lower end of the variance - if you're willing to risk that I'm sure it's a good enough gamble.
