The lack of quality control makes most masteries not really worth pursuing, there are some good sets though. What makes it novel to trophies or Steam cheevos is that each achievement list has a win condition for when you beat the game, so it's a good motivator to have you push through some more difficult games you otherwise would've given up on or resorted to save states for.
