I agree with you that it's better to slowly explain things naturally through the actions and dialogue over time, rather than dump it all on the reader at once. It's boring and breaks the 4th wall when you understood it already yourself.
Every exposition dump made me want to kys. Cannot skip to not miss out on other things, don't want to hear it and get angry that I'm getting hand holding like a woman.
Have you noticed that women always ask about stuff that the movie will explain 5 minutes later? You see it a lot with streamers. If they'd just shut up and wait patiently.
I swear Half-Life 2 did it right, you could replay the game with director comments on and listen to the devs explain why something is there.
Can call it "journalist mode", might be more befitting these times.
