I wouldn't call it brilliant, but i would call it bold. I would have liked the story to be different and have Ellie go on her own path but it feels like this was the best choice after the ending of part 1. You can't just do that and then enjoy life in Jackson while your daughter is out there farming zombies. The way they did it feels shitty though, he should have had a less humiliating death, maybe sacrifice himself for Ellie somehow. But i guess he really liked the idea he went with.
