When I was a kid, I used to go innawoods with my cousin, and me and her used to piss and poop together communally. I used to enjoy looking at her steaming excrement, and the darkening of the tree barks because it had our urine on it. Made in Abyss has a childlike approach towards its curiosity towards the urinary and digestive systems, and how it portrays it with a sense of wonder, instead of as something shameful/humourful. I miss my childhood, I miss being a kid, and all the wonderful experiences of youth with my love ones.

I think the scene works because it is something that Riko would be curious about, and try it itself. It wouldn't work with just a random kid.
