Oh definitely it's perfect for downtime. I went from being one of the people who went there for visa runs to staying one or two months at a time.
Hat Yai is a tourist town but very different to others because it's packed on the weekends with Malaysians eating/drinking/shopping and chill as fuck during the week.
Everything is a lot cheaper there because Malaysians are cheap cunts and it's a student town. I got a nice 1 bed apartment for 7k thb right near Central Festival.
Would recommend Kho Hong a few km out of town if you do HDY. Unique cafes/restaurants everywhere and an awesome live music scene with a lot of talent, fell in love with this acoustic lass playing a few nights a week at music house, voice of an angel.
No tourists at all and no one even notices you, went 6 weeks without getting harassed by a single tout, suits me perfect.
Pic rel, a cafe that's open to midnight, look close and you'll see the easels, can buy a canvas and start painting for a few hours, constant stream of cute lasses painting there, great place, was always there in the morning for coffee and night for beer.
Songhkla old town feels very Real Thailand™, lovely big beaches, nice lake, not ruined by farangs but still enough there to cater for them. If I was going to retire in Thailand, it would be there. Feel like I need to explore more a bit north, as a region it's got soul and not destroyed by the tourist menace.
The Thai muslim lasses always intrigued me, I was used to Malaysia where they were off limits and ignored you because it was taboo to date a white guy but the Thai ones were always flirty and there's no retardation about interfaith relationships unlike just across the border.
