The socialist states of Nicaragua and Honduras have invaded the right-wing states of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize in a socialist attempt to unite Central America under one flag. Ortega was the 54th and 58th president of Nicaragua, reigning from 1985 to 1990 and from 2007 to present. He was a leader in the Sandinista National Liberation Front that overthrew American-backed Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1979. Under his tenure, Nicaragua has experienced democratic backsliding, and beginning in 2021 he has jailed many political opponents.
With the collapse of America, he sees opportunity, and the Nicaraguan military has relative experience from fighting U.S.-backed contra rebels in the 80s. It remains to be seen whether his fight to unite Central America will be successful.
