I think what helped ease Rosalina is that she originally looked more like Peach before branching off into her own thing detail by detail
The inherent problem with a black female in Mario is that we don't have a strong universal reference for what she'd even look like.
The idea alone is kind of "fanficy" no different than any other human being added into the ensemble because a lot of what made these characters to begin with stems from a gameplay over story design philosophy (with Rosalina being an exception that proves the rule).
Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina are perfectly uniformed with Mario's iconography (mushrooms, flowers, and stars) and Pauline was there since the beginning so adding a new female (who mind you would presumably be in the franchise for the long run) is hard to visualize without coming across as well, forced even if she wasn't black.
