>mediocre animations
And they are better for that too. Dungeon crawlers are much faster solely because they lack animations and aren't trying to be movies. Its all that unnecessary animations and load times that drag down most 3D rpgs. For 3D games its like
>battle starts
>black loading screen
>gaming zooming in on your party
>your turn comes up
>menus are often times laggy as shit
>tell one of your characters to attack
>character then cartwheel, back flips, summersaults, run up buildings, chant some magic chi nonsense
>the final attack is just the character pulling out a gun and shooting the enemy
>enemy has stagger animation every time they get hit
>repeat above for the next 2-3 niggas in a row
>battle ends
>victory dance animation
>another black loading screen just to get to the results menu
And each time you're waiting on animations to end before you can do anything. Meanwhile Dungeon crawlers
>battle starts
>everything loads up instantly
>select an enemy or attack
>they attack instantly
>can take out 9 enemies in the time it takes to take out 3 in a normal 3D rpg
>battles end like hitting a light switch
5th gen really corrupted a generation into thinking all that unnecessary animation is good. Dungeon crawlers are just normal rpgs without the bloat, half the time at least.
