The idea that Anno "hated otaku" is completely unfounded, especially when Eva and so much of Anno's other work pay homage to the various anime and tokusatsu shows that Anno is such a huge fan of. The message of Eva definitely centres on the importance of human connection, but people act like it was him lecturing his fans to "touch grass" when so much of it was rooted in his own experiences and mental state.
