I watched a Youtube video where this lady reviewed the armor on the Cathay models and talked about the historical influences, and she was really impressed with how they used mountain armor. It's probably mythical but it shows up a lot on artistic depictions of gods or famous heroes. So with the Cathay range, GW only put it on powerful heroes and the stone guardians.

They didn't just go "oh cool weird Chinese thing, let's slap that everywhere" they actually learned more about the context of it and used that to build the visual language of the army.

Anyway, I was just reminded of that by seeing that third party guy putting mountain armor on basic ass troops
