I figured the rest of your squad was closer to the enemy's level because of how hard it is equalize your allies.
The stat requirement would be fine if the game had the courtesy to give you EXP so you weren't afraid of dumping stats wrong every level. It really is annoying.
So in SN3 PS2 it's exactly the same as SN2. No indication or help or anything when it comes to class change. PSP (the way better version) makes it so it's only a level threshold.
And what's really cool about SN3 is that classes split kind of like Legendary Names in Etrian Odyssey. Each split specializes in either physical or magical with their own unique skills.

Oh that's awesome! You get a whole new fight based on your choice? Even in my first ever playthrough I still chose not to step in there but doomed then in the end with another choice. It seemed like the chivalrous thing to do.
