Early AoS really was that bad. Literally no rules or lore or anything. But it's gotten a lot better (3rd edition was legitimately good) especially since pretty much everyone has shiny new model ranges. However it's been on a backslide recently since 4th edition fell for the same shrimplification meme as 40k 10th and GW decided to squat a bunch of units that only came out like 18 months prior.
