ALL ballistic missiles go into low orbit, release their warheads, which then fall to earth at hypersonic speeds. They have electronic guidance that allows them to "veer" towards a target in a several hundred mile radius.
Each missile can carry up to 20 warheads. So unless you can shoot them on the way up, or in space, they are very hard to defend against.
