In Persona 3 the gimmick was that you were exploring hundreds of randomized floors of a megadungeon tower, and the navigator character would tell you stuff like if you were coming up on a floor with a boss, when death spawns, etc. 4 and 5 dropped that structure so all the nav character was left to do was battle chatter, but that just meant saying things like the number of enemies or weaknesses despite having a big UI element for them. It's a role that no longer has any purpose but stays around because its a designated waifu slot.
