Yeah, Covenant didn't stick the landing. David was supposed to be insane and malfunctioning while still viewing himself as perfect, immortal, and better than everyone else. It's why he keeps repeating that poem, which is implying that the giant empire of engineers is now destroyed and helped turned to dust by him, but he incorrectly states the wrong person as author of the poem.
