It's really bad. The best parts of Alien and Aliens were the aesthetic and directly caused by the "low-tech" equipment. They didn't have cameras all over, perfect sensors, bright lighting, perfect cell phones, etc. They had to rig up the bulky motion detectors and they still didn't work right. This is the stuff that made it interesting and scary in the first place.

No one needs to make up some lame headcanon explanation. They're not related movies whatsoever. A director wanted to use the name, so slapped the label on, but didn't give a shit enough to make them fit. Therefore, jumping through mindhoops to pull an explanation out of your ass is idiotic.

Yet we still moved from old CRTs to flat screens because it saved space and weight. The Nostromo was commissioned a decade after the events of Prometheus and got a retrofit a half decade later with complete 3d mapping drone tech and holograms. Tech that would be improved and applied to future ships.

Ridley Scott just does things because he thinks they're cool and his taste nowadays is notoriously shit. Like his movies are blue cause he thinks it's awesome, cause in 1999 or something a blur movie was cool. That's all there is to it. He makes Gladiator 2 with Pavian gladiators because he think it's cool. He sits there thinking "How can we spice things up with some cool set piece? I know, let the hero fight a giant rhino in the colosseum!" He has never invested a single thought deeper than that into anything he does. After all he's always been an advertisment guy. It served him well when he was still "with it" but once he got old and lame things took a turn for the worse.

Simplistic low tech equipment makes a lot more sense for extreme deep space missions than these shiny touch screen modern sci fi rubbish. If your ship breaks down 500 light years from any human settlement, you want it to be as basic, sturdy and easy to repair as possible.

This one I'd be ok with if it was not "hey this is literally the ship from Alien! so pretend this is the Space Jockey!" and more "hey, this is what the aliens used to look like, but they went crazy modifying themselves more and more, fusing themselves with organic technology, until they made some that were completely fused with their ships and could never leave" which would also explain why the ending engineer looks so different from the beginning engineer

>can't recognise the alien snake as aggressive
I can sorta look past that one. They made an entire scene earlier where he was playing with small version of those before they go into the goo. And he's wearing a suit so if the creature did something it would be a pathetic attack. At no point should he think it could be strong enough to wrap him in seconds, break his arm then enter his suit. It's the same thing from Alien and the facehugger: a freshly born creature shouldn't be strong enough to wrap up an adult, penetrate a space suit, put the adult to sleep and impregnate them in minutes. But they removed that scene, so no idea what they were smoking. Then the map guy was plain retarded. He immediately wanted to start smoking weed too.

Probably Scott, like Lucas, doesn't really understand that the clunky aesthetic is part of why people love the original movies. Both rushed to spruce up their franchises with shiny CGI as soon as they could. I get it. It's really really hard for an artist to perceive their art similarly to how outside people perceive it. Cameron might be a bit like that too. I remember reading how when he made T1, he really wanted to make T2, he just made T1 look the way it did because of his super low budget.

No, it's not. Ocean-going vessels right now don't have such a disparity in technology. Space craft sure as fuck wouldn't. These things have to go off on their own for years with no help. They're not going to be using floppy disks and CRT screens when ships decades ago had holograms and floating drones. Fuck off trying to make excuses for their shit storytelling. They don't want to stick with the alien lore and storyline and that's it.

In retrospect yeah, it's pretty obvious that all the Alien-related stuff is really shoehorned into Prometheus. You could remove everything from that movie that is actually connected to Alien and it would still be essentially the same movie. I don't know why Scott would have felt any need to tie the movie in to Alien for marketing reasons though. He's a legendary director who can put butts in seats on the strength of his name alone. It's not like people would go "Oh, Ridley Scott is making an epic sci-fi movie, but I don't want to see it because it's not an Alien sequel".

>doesn't really understand that the clunky aesthetic is part of why people love the original movies
Because its literally impossible for it to be true. YOU a little shit born in the 90s who saw the movie 30 years later could have liked it for that reason. But everyone who liked the movie at the time did not have the separation in time or technology to see the tech as retro futurist, it was just the future. The same applies to star wars. These are auteurs that are following the same impulse as when they created their original masterpiece, and are then shit on by ungrateful children for "not getting it"

Eh, when space travel is part of normal business operations it's more like comparing the latest jumbo jet to an ancient cargo plane dropping off aid supplies in Africa. Spread business operations out even further, interstellar instead of international, and it's not inconceivable for a corporation to commission new vessels using leftover two-gen-old tech for super cheap. The notion that it would be more cost effective than one-gen-old tech might be flimsy if you don't account for the economic separation being more like the age of discovery.

I'm not shitting on these guys, they are some of the greatest directors of all time. I'm just exploring. Sure, in 1979 Scott would have had no reason to think of his Alien aesthetic as being retro. But by 2012 he could have realized that for better or worse, that aesthetic, though now retro, was an integral part of the feel of the Alien franchise. I'm not saying that he should have listed to fan whining or anything like that, I'm just pointing out that it would have been possible for him to grasp that in 2012.

One of the problems with this theory is that the space station we see in Aliens has pretty much the same aesthetic as the Nostromo. A bit spiffier, but not by much. I can see why space truckers or disposable space marines would get low tech, but I figure that a space station orbiting the Earth would probably look like top of the line tech.

Such a massive monolithic investment as a space station absolutely makes sense to fall a generation or two behind before being replaced by a new build. It should, however, receive ongoing retrofitting and have an interesting clash of old and new tech.

Now we upgraded to modern PC's and the software is fucking garbage and unreliable. So yeah having the Nostromo use old tech is perfectly normal.

That's fine for the control systems, but it still affects literally everything else they have access to. Do they have miniature drones? inexpensive tiny hd cameras? audio recording devices? easy communicators? All this shit makes it child's play to find the alien, track it, trick it into going where you want, capture it and kill it. As with all these types of movies, not having the capability is what makes it difficult and interesting for the characters. They don't know where or what the monster is. They can't talk to each other or get help. They don't have good cameras.

fun facts:
>microcircuitry is extremely vulnerable to gamma rays, one ray in the wrong place at the wrong time will fry them, running or not
>radiation shielding only has two forms. Putting tons of mass between sensitive areas, which increases exponentially for each percentage of protection, or magnetic deflection, which requires huge amounts of energy, thus massive expense

Therefore, 70s computer technology would be ideal for cheap spaceships, and only ships that could afford magnetic radiation deflection could have more advanced computers.

Exactly, you upgrade all your hardware, you're forced to buy a license for the software as well. Said license only runs for a few years and paid upgrades are mandatory. These tech firms like Honeywell, Siemens force you into these contracts so big corps are VERY careful when to upgrade their systems to avoid choke-holds like these. The only reason we upgraded our original 70's tech is because spare parts were running out. Why waste millions on an upgrade when your old tech works just fine? I mean we still use telephones with dial plates for fucks sake and we're the biggest chem corp in the WORLD.

We have ONE guy left who properly knows how to program and debug our systems and he's 60+. Nobody know what will happen the moment he retires, they're trying to bring the new guys up to speed but you can't just pass on decades of know-how for an obscure system. Again this is the result of management incompetence because everyone at operations knew this shit would happen one day.

it's pretty kino that the Engineer kills the humans because they don't cherish or respect their females, as the engeneres race does not have them and having them was their greatest wish.

I don't think people comment enough on the fact that Alien and Star Wars were the first science fiction to ever legitimize their aesthetics

Nothing's perfect, you might smirk at a muppet or a crab-walking stuntman, but people don't credit enough that that place and time in real life and media is the first time audiences ever looked at a vision of a spaceship and intuitively believed what they saw

Why DO the interiors of the Nostromo and the Millennium Falcon still look so "real," tangible, legitimate pieces of functional technology to audiences fifty years later, but any film from just a decade or two prior to that is always unbearably kitsch?

Not only does it have plenty of upgrades, but the jets and onboard equipment are plenty upgraded too. If there were autonomous handheld mapping drones they could use to scout locations in that universe, you're damn well sure Nostromo and Sulaco would have had plenty of them. And far more with that same technology such as robotic AI marines.

I know the whole duology is a David circlejerk but I was still baffled by him arbitrarily turning from "kind of shady asshole antihero" to "the worst motherfucker in the universe" offscreen between movies

He was so much easier to like in Prometheus when he was still deeply dangerous and untrustworthy but hadn't utterly fucking chimped out yet, I wish he had stayed at about that level
Also what an amusing BTS pic, I never really considered before that Prometheus had some of the most screentime and best done special effects of a decapitated character ever put to film

Yeah, Covenant didn't stick the landing. David was supposed to be insane and malfunctioning while still viewing himself as perfect, immortal, and better than everyone else. It's why he keeps repeating that poem, which is implying that the giant empire of engineers is now destroyed and helped turned to dust by him, but he incorrectly states the wrong person as author of the poem.

No, it was consistent for the only two that mattered. The other two were just shit cash grabs like most later sequels in series. Ridley is the only who came barging back in to fuck up the lore and tell everyone le actually his evil android made the xenos and the space jockey was a big human all along! So yeah, people can be bothered by it since now it has to be shoehorned in as hard as possible to all new alien stuff even though it's completely retarded.
