rev should absolutely carry the nightlord otherwise something went wrong (if you are saying solo then there is a little bit more merit)
she needs handholding the most at lower levels...

unless you want a lengthy writeup the tl;dr is just be aware of every potential boss spawn or poi even if unmarked, as well as whether your group can handle it
Its okay to full wipe to a field boss day 1 as long as it dies promptly enough, they are very important targets that often drop things that set the rest of the run up for success, but it is a time vs reward deal
the more time you travel far the more time you waste and risk you have of getting zoned out of loot day 2 which could lead to a rougher nightlord
some classes need you to route certain ways though or split (revenant and recluse), (everyone but revenant for churches) etc
