I find it's most effective to think of generating like creating a large chapter/novella in an ongoing story. This was the absolute reality before context sizes got so Xbox-Fuckhueg, but it's still usually easier for an AI to work with a summation of key personality traits and story events fresh, rather than using a small context to automatically clip it down as it progresses. It's also similar to how a lot of TV show seasons work, where there will be overarching themes that are important in one 'season', but the next season might emphasize different characters in slightly different contexts, while still tying into the show's over-arching canon.
