there's a Buddhist lesson in that, trying to understand all the god lore is not very enlightening so why not shit it up and go wild? then the student will be so burnt out by its absurdism they will drop it. I don't know whether the Jesuits and translators would have picked up on that spiritual lesson if they were approaching it from a foreign religion, they just had to make sense of it.
