Caribbean sugar plantation slavery was brutal. Most sugar plantation slaves were worked to death within a year or so. Most were underfed and any sign whatsoever of rebellion was met with overwhelming brutality. North American cotton plantation slaves had it relatively easy by comparison. Note that Jamaica alone used up almost a million and a half African slaves while the total number of slaves imported to North America was less than half a million.
