I think at most Papyrus could be what a piece of the Knight eventually turns into. Like a Kirby-Dark Matter situation where a part of pure eldritch chaos becomes a force of pure good.
Like maybe near the end we'll see a few things that tie Deltarune back to Undertale which will encourage Deltarune-onlies to play Undertale. But I doubt the game will do anything that requires you to have played UT to fully understand.
