I'll admit that I was wrong about it being used in the case of a specific person, I can't find any support for that and I was incorrectly conflating the unknown subject use with the known subject use in my head. The rise of using it for a specific person makes sense because the use case where this would primarily be useful (online interactions) didn't exist until very recently, and it makes sense that it's become normal now. If you don't like the language you speak changing based on people's needs I'd recommend learning French instead.
