The military is a great source motivation or background for sci-fi, I'm tired of it all being infantry grunt military stuff. Like with indentured servitude for passage to the new world in the 17th century, the government could colonize a planet using personnel under labor contracts/enlisted for a ticket to the (literal) new world.
I'd love to read about a joe schmoe working as a starship mechanic or aboard an oil rig and encountering aliens. Less of the "For the hecking emperorino" type sci fi military shit, and more like Isaac Clarke "You're kidding me, on my fucking day off?!"
