Lol. It is basically true, Monsters in UT/DR are a few steps above the residents of Halloween in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Not really bad, but a community of pure humans would probably be freaked out on running into them.

>the only form of validation he's ever had is after winning the spelling bee
It's the only form of validation he's ever *NOTICED*. We know nothing of Berdly's home life. He feels on the inside like he's a pointless little blue bird, but we don't know how true that is or what it entails. Lots of people feel like they're ignored when they do in fact get plenty of love and attention - this is characteristic of several known pathologies, including BPD and narcissism (a dark triad trait). Berdly's behaviour after winning the spelling bee is classic narcissism all over, which, being an inherent violation of social norms, makes him unlikeable.

It's interesting because Susie and Kris are not angels, with Susie clearly behaving sociopathically prior to her epiphany in Chapter 1 and Kris having very warped sociopathic and machiavellian moments. But neither are so consistently, loudly, overwhelmingly unpleasant as Berdly is from Chapter 1. That's the intent of his character, to depict high IQ narcissism, and Toby has succeeded. It's true to life, as both a joke and also a sincere inspection of the psychology and how it gradually gets better. You'll just have to accept that.
