That is to say, interior pages drawn with the sensibilities of a cover.
They are usually splash pages, and there's nothing wrong with splash pages, but there is something wrong with cover pages.
Cover pages are not real pages, they are not a snapshot of a real moment in time in the story of the comic. They are a studio photoshoot, staged, fake, abstracted from reality.
These types of pages are distracting. Because they don't exist in any kind of real passage of time, it is impossible to imagine them moving at all, they are frozen. And when you read them, you do not see a climactic moment in the story, you see a cover, you are reminded that you are reading a comic, and the story is lost.
