The only reason John (and Billy) invited Sarah along was because there is safety in number, Sarah is a scientist so she's the closest thing to a doctor, and she does some of what the soldiers does, shes' a good fighter with gun. They knew she was with Miguel and they probably assume he'll tag along in the beginning since Miguel doesn't like the other soldiers. I'm not saying they absolutely must be gays, just that they could be, if they weren't gay though they still probably love each other in a platonic way that would be more than any desire for Sarah, like Holmes and Watson.
