I did actually end up forcing it to install drivers, but that didn't fix it.
I managed to figure out what was wrong. The wifi card is there, but it's "disconnected" from the computer. I found like 3 other people with this exact issue from the last 30 days. In every case they had installed Linux. If you run Linux on this motherboard and power it off with anything other than a software shutdown, it will temporarily kill the wifi card. Doing a full BIOS reset by clearing CMOS is the only way to fix it (haven't done so yet btw). Guess what the first thing I did when I finished building it was? That's right, I installed Linux.
moral of the story: Linux is gay and stupid and I'm way too employed to use it on my fancy new hardware
