FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
Usage: paste into Powershell, run.
irm https://get.activated.win | iex
>and Office?
Same method, use Ohook
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

Any version of Windows will run reForge or koboldcpp just fine, but just use Enterprise or IoT Enterprise LTSC like usual. Server takes some elbow grease to make act like a desktop edition.

windows shortcut icon bug

Has anyone else had this bug? I've seen it in W10 and W11, possibly even in W7.
Every once in a while, all the shortcut icons overlaid on desktop shortcuts will change to some seemingly random other icon. Right clicking the desktop and refreshing fixes it.

I once dropped an Energizer CR2032, with an expiry date about 5 years into the future, into a Ivy Bridge with a dying battery: it didn't even last 18 months before it started giving me trouble again.
So no, it's not outside the realms of possibility.

How is Windows 11 Home compatibility with unsupported CPUs? Heard it has been getting worse as time has gone by with every new Windows Security/feature update. How is it nowadays? Anyone started getting blue screens that hadn't gotten them before? I know about Windows 10/11 LTSC/Enterprise versions, but currently more interested in Windows 11 Home right now.

It requires a Nehalem - a 17 year old CPU architecture.
If you're getting blue screens, it's your 17 year old motherboard telling you to put it out of its misery.

The obscure registry hack of the day is...
>rolls (loaded) dice - H/T >>105754625
"Configure an enhanced Boot Configuration Data validation profile"
(save this as UTF-16 LE, to make it a true REGEDIT5 file)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; Secure Boot, until Windows 8, 'measured' (Secure Boot-ese for 'checked')
; the BCD in a rather agggessive fashion: if anything much beyond the boot
; order elements had been changed, it would reject it as a 'modified boot
; path'. Microsoft, after fielding thousands of 'I just installed a language
; pack and my computer won't start' support calls (caused by the 'locale'
; elements in the BCD changing), realised their mistake and relaxed the 'BCD
; validation profile', removing all but a few elements (mostly the actual
; device and file name elements) from 'measurement'. While this certainly
; made it more 'yooser frenly' (and stopped the above support calls), it
; also reduced Secure Boot's ability to detect tampering with the early-boot
; files - the exact thing it was designed to protect against.
;
; So, to appease the security nutters who cried foul, Microsoft included a
; new Grop Policy along with Windows 8 to specify extra elements in the BCD
; validation profile, which will additionally be checked during Secure Boot's
; BCD measurements. As an aside, they also included another policy to REMOVE
; elements from this validation profile, but that's outside the scope of this
; hack.
;
; Anyway, adding an element is pretty simple: it's just a bunch of lines (REG_
; MULTI_SZ) in '<entry>:<value>' format: <entry> is a BCD 'application' type,
; such as 'winload', 'memtest' (without quotes) or similar, or 'all' (again,
; without quotes) to apply it to all BCD application entries. <value> is a
; specific value name to protect, such as 'hypervisordebugport', (if you're
; feeling masochistic) 'locale' or (if you're an adventurer) '0x16000074'
(cont'd)

; (again again, without quotes). There are some limitations on what you can
; specify and expect to work, however - consult [https://learn.microsoft.com/
; en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2012-R2-and-2012/
; dn144691(v=ws.11)] for more information.
;
; This example adds various memory options to the BCD validation profile, to
; mitigate certain early-boot malware that hide themselves from the system by
; loading themselves into specific regions of memory, then configuring the
; BCD to ignore those memory regions, so Windows (and by extension, any anti-
; malware software running on it) can't 'see' them. Feel free to add (or
; remove) to your tastes, though doing it inside the Registry Editor, so you
; don't have to type out raw UTF-16 hex codes, is recommended.

If you install Windows 10 LTSC today, you'll get security updates until 2032. As for software, Windows 10 and 11 have the same kernel, so everything is going to be compatible between the two. Basically, you'll be fine until Windows 13 comes around.

I did actually end up forcing it to install drivers, but that didn't fix it.

I managed to figure out what was wrong. The wifi card is there, but it's "disconnected" from the computer. I found like 3 other people with this exact issue from the last 30 days. In every case they had installed Linux. If you run Linux on this motherboard and power it off with anything other than a software shutdown, it will temporarily kill the wifi card. Doing a full BIOS reset by clearing CMOS is the only way to fix it (haven't done so yet btw). Guess what the first thing I did when I finished building it was? That's right, I installed Linux.

moral of the story: Linux is gay and stupid and I'm way too employed to use it on my fancy new hardware

I'm afraid, my fellow WINanons, this will be the last obscure registry hack of the day (from me, anyway). My pop-in to see how 4chan is doing, for the first time since the hack, has been a rather underwhelming experience (this thread has been about the only highlight) - and since I hardly ever come here anymore anyway, it's obviously come time to draw a line under this place. I bid you anons farewell.
The obscure registry hack of the day is...

"Enable stricter Windows Authenticode signature verification"
REGEDIT4

; Until late 2013, there's was a flaw in how Windows created and checked
; signatures on signed executables that left some 'wiggle room' to modify
; an executable before Authenticode started screaming that it wasn't properly
; signed. It was considered bad enough that it got its own CVE and everything
; (CVE-2013-3900); Microsoft promptly fixed the bug, and were going to make
; it the default... until they realised just how many improperly-signed-but-
; perfectly-harmless executables there were in circulation, so they chickened
; out and made it optional. It was always considered a smart idea to enable
; these stricter checks however (especially now, when there are far fewer of
; these improperly-signed, pre-2013 executables in the wild), so you'd need a
; pretty good excuse not to enable this nowadays.

I tried the windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC just now booting from ventoy.

ShutUp10 sets all the registry keys and disables the services that you want set and disabled if you use the recommended settings, while Chris's tool lets you do other things like enable the ultimate power plan and such. So ShutUp10 first, then mess with Chris's tool if you want.

There's no such thing as optimal, with that. That just depends on the output device currently used, the audio codec with its inner parts like the DAC & amp, and the audio drivers.
I just keep my general volume under the 20s as I'm always on muh headphones, and fine-tune per-app with the mixer: be it windows' or the xbox game bar's.

well if it's a second hand laptop and the cpu is socketed, then it's possible the sticker is inaccurate (if it was replaced), though usually they're upgraded unless the seller was cheap
as for hwinfo/cpu-z disagreeing, i guess i don't know enough about them to know if they could get this wrong. i've seen programs give "unknown intel cpu" type responses, but a specific AND wrong answer? probably a bug with the program. i take it hwinfo agrees with the sticker?

Presumably you meant H.265/HEVC? H.264/AVC 10-bit is quite rare and I doubt whether MSFT provided support for this capability in their decoder.
>the libavcodec-based DirectShow filters do, thoughbeit - like LAV Filters
WMP uses Media Foundation transforms by default, so you'll have to install a codec of that type.
https://www.codecguide.com/media_foundation_codecs.htm
You'll handle vidya, at least, but not the .ASS subtitles - WMP doesn't support that unless you have xy-VSFilter installed (choose either the pinterf or Masaiki fork - the latter actually uses libass as the backend).
It's a DirectShow filter, though, so you have to make WMP use DirectShow filters for media playback. Assume that you'll have to install additional filters for video/audio playback (like the aforementioned LAV filters - just install the K-Lite Codec Pack as a one-stop solution) if the built-in stuff can't handle the coding.
All you have to do is rename all of your vidya's extension to .video - WMP won't recognize this as an extension that is supported by Media Foundation, so it will try to fall back to DirectShow.
>you may also turn off Media Foundation support for specific file extensions like mp4, mkv and whatnot, but since it's global-wide and there are applications that are dependent on the framework, it's not feasible as it will break video playback for these cases

But with all that tinkering you might as well just use MPC-HC (bundled in K-Lite) as a player. It actually has libass support implemented from within.
>TL;DR: stop using WMP - use any other media player that supports 10-bit stuff and ASS subtitles

hello /g/friends, i'm having some issues since i installed my new 9060XT
While idle/scrolling down pages i got twice a BSOD with DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION, doesn't get past the 0% so it doesn't give me a dump file to read, the screen does freeze for a minute or two and then shows up the BSOD
Event viewer is empty, only tells me that there was a problem writing the dump file
Already tried to uninstall drivers with DDU and reinstall them using the 900mb install from the amd website
Doesn't happen while playing games, or at least it didn't happen during the last 10 hours of MHWilds
the only thing that updated other than the GPU drivers were the chipset one, since they came bundled with it and were hidden behind an extra menu that i found out during the reinstall
Mobo firmware is out of date, but i'd rather not touch that since we're having random power outages
No overclocks, only XMP and REBAR enabled
Using W10, cpu is a 5800x
GPU is the only new thing in my pc so the blame falls straight there, but the fact that crashes happens during low usage makes me wonder if it's something else
Anything i can try to confirm it's the GPU?

Could be a fucked up driver (in which case try downgrading it) or some kind of hardware failure itself. Though I guess it's a pain in the ass to debug if there are no minidumps or the big ol' full memory dump file in %SystemRoot%.
Otherwise you'd just open up WinDbg, load it, !analyze -v and proceed with bugcheck-specific diagnostics to see which kind of a nigger is causing problems.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/bug-check-0x133-dpc-watchdog-violation
I'd check first whether your DIMMs aren't failing with Memtest86+, though. Most of the random BSOD errors can be explained with this, plus improper clocking and voltage.
>Anything i can try to confirm it's the GPU?
Try stress-testing it? FurMark and Unigine benchmarks should be good.

so what's the path forward for windowsfags?
For win10 I could switch to some weird fuck iot version with support until 2032 but win10 is falling behind in tech - as an example, dealing with .heic images is a total shitshow and most phones nowadays shoot photos in .heic (inb4 use jpeg/raw)
alternatively there's win 11 but is it even possible to unfuck it? it's blatantly obvious that microdick wants all your data ever, so you'll have to struggle with their bullshit every update, which seems very tiresome to deal with long-term

I kinda dislike macos for everything except codeslop and linux is macos but worse so the alternatives aren't great either

>Change your current edition using MAS to Enterprise, activate it again with its HWID module, then use MAS again via its TSforge module to give it 3 years of ESU.
>Install Enterprise fresh on a new computer, either 10 or 11.
>Use IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 (10) or 2024 (11) which are very minimal and have updates until 2032 and 2035 respectively.

Those're your choices. Apparently if you're a good little MS account user people that use Home can get a year of ESU through some kind of reward point program but that doesn't matter here.

You can just install the HEIC image extension from the store to make it work.
They require "HEVC Video Extensions" as a prerequisite, though. Not to mention there are two variants - the paid one with MS own decoder, and the free "From Device Manufacturer" variant.
Or you can just avoid Store and install the appxbundles manually:
https://www.codecguide.com/media_foundation_codecs.htm

Windows Explorer and any other apps relying on Windows Image Component will be able to read HEIF/HEIC correctly after you install the extensions.

There is a way but it's hacky. The MAS website in the OP tells you have to do it under its 10 EoL page.
In basic terms
>Download IoT LTSC 2021 ISO
>Mount it
>Go to registry and change a key to the IoT LTSC callsign
>Quickly run through the setup.exe wizard (saying you don't want to update now)
>If it all worked out it'll say that you're basically repair upgrading an already existing IoT LTSC install and it'll let you keep all your files

Depends on the games to some degree. If you nuke the OS you may also nuke some dependencies which were installed along with those games. If they're Steam games, then Steam is smart enough to recognize those games as long as you point it to their install location. I think other stores may do the same but your mileage may vary. If the game is recognized by Steam then I'm pretty sure Steam will install any required dependencies so the games will work without needing to be downloaded again.

Hi my brothers in Christ. I have this problem with Windows 10 LTSC 21H2 where Xbox app is just dogshit; each time I open it I got this 'DesktopWindowXamlSource' blank window, I purged OneDrive and I have it since then, besides that each time I want to play a game it says I'm offline and I need to reset and repair the Xbox app and clean my Internet stuff with:
>ipconfig /flushdns
>ipconfig /release
>ipconfig /renew
>netsh winsock reset
>netsh int ip reset
>netsh interface ipv4 reset
>netsh interface ipv6 reset
>netsh interface tcp reset
Which is really annoying, a true pain in the ass.

Does anyone here have Fancontrol on win 11 working on startup? Best I can do is get it to run in the background in task manager, but it's not properly running or in taskbar.

I have tried the settings toggle in the program itself. I have the tried the settings app startup toggle. I have tried putting the shortcut in the startup folder. I have double checked the scheduled task the app creates. I have tried a custom scheduled task. I have tried a scheduled runas task. I have tried a powershell script. I have tried a scheduled task that runs a powershell script. Every guide on google and chatGPT fails. I have tried both the net 4 and net 8 versions of fan control.

I have multiple other programs that require UAC starting just fine on startup. Just not this shit. It's really annoying because I really need my case fans to ramp up on GPU temperature but MSI bios only allows motherboard and CPU sensors as an input.

At this point I'm wondering if the only way around it is autohotkey where it opens the program and types my admin password in.

Quite a bugger it is. As actual Visual C++ redist installation proceeds through Windows Installer (.MSI installers), it might try dereferencing the actual .msi installer, for ex. the 2022 x64 Minimum Runtime. It's all in the registry, so if it refers to a phantom installer, don't be surprised if msiexec craps out.
Open up regedit, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products key, and delete any subkeys that pertain to the VC++ redistributables (look for the ProductName). For safe measure, make sure you "uninstall" the redistributable through Programs & Features (it will probably just complain about lack of an installer and providing you the option to remove the entry). Restart the OS and reinstall the redists again.
Start with the 2022 x64 Minimum Runtime first, test whether it works, and if another nigger is causing this problem again - whack it. Kinda like whack'a'mole.

>Is there a way to just download them or install from microsoft? I don't know how to install this from github

I've installed Windows 11 recently, playing Judgment. Haven't played it on Windows 10 so can't compare and maybe this is something specific to this particular game, but can Windows 11 actually render DSR properly in borderless windowed mode if in-game resolution is higher than desktop?
What I mean is:
My native/desktop is 1080p, I enable DLDSR/DSR/SuperResolution in Nvidia to get 1440p as an option.
Select 1440p in the game that runs in borderless -> the game will be running at 1080p. Have to use Exclusive fullscreen for 1440p to work properly.
This was on Windows 10. I don't think I could even select 1440p on Win10 in borderless mode in most games.
Do the same thing in Judgment, run it in borderless, select 1440p -> it actually runs in 1440p despite being borderless window.
Is this actually a thing on Windows 11 thanks to improved flip mode or whatever? I don't have any other games to test it right now.

What the fuck is happening to my jumplists?
My entire taskbar is just self-destructing. First Brave, and now other programs that had integrated shortcuts in the jumplist.
Picrel is what it should look like, but I'm left with just the bottom half.

Snagging the jumplist file from %AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations somewhat fixed Brave, in that the new tab buttons are back, but it still refuses to populate recent browsing history.

All pinned taskbar shortcuts vanished as well, but they seem to be back after a restart.

I'm very new to this shit

Is there a way to perfectly and entirely copy the content of one drive to another that is less prone to weird issues that can happen with manually copying files over? Like, is this what a disk image is?

And if I have two drives in RAID 1, can I then convert that to a RAID 10 setup with 4 drives without reformatting the drives?

well the only time "weird issues" would occur doing any kind of copying is if there's something either wrong with the disc or wrong with the filesystem itself. or i suppose you're not using appropriate software or settings in the first place

I've checked online and the options out there either don't work or have some stupid regressions from the native explorer like not being able to set a file view per folder or something else.

Well, one issue I run into commonly is I have a lot of files past Window's normal filename/path length character limit. So far Total Commander hasn't had too many issues copying stuff over despite that, but it can sometime have issues in rare cases

Additionally, I might be setting up database software, and i'd want the associated between everything to be copied as well, so the entire drive being mirrored, not just the files copied over. Same for if like I wanted to back up installed software and still have it function on the new drive, which copying files over often doesn't do

>raid1/10 is a method, not an implementation. there's many ways to get a raid1. like a hardware raid card, fakeraid, various software raids, etc

Then I have no idea, I'd just be using whatever the Ugreen OS uses to set raid up

Win10 IoT LTSC, but make sure you have an SSD. Win10 is practically unusable on a standard hard drive.
>Pretty sure 7 was the most relevant when it was new but I don't know how secure that is.
I wouldn't recommend fucking with 7 unless you're either keeping it offline, or you know how to obtain ESU updates. You'll also have to find a compatible browser if you decide to run 7, and using an outdated browser is one of the most unsafe things you can do these days, especially on an OS no longer receiving regular security updates.

when i press printsc alone it opens a popup snipping tool bar and option to take a snap of only a part of the screen (rectangular selected with cursor). after i do that the picture is saved to clipboard and i have to manually open paint to paste it and save it. is there any way to automaticaly open paint and paste the picture after i take a shot? i had that set up using sharex on windows 10, but i really dont want to use 3rd party if i dont have to

tho, to be honest, it might not be the worst idea. snipping tool on win 11 seems slower and less smooth than sharex on win10

It's basically just a case of using a retail or volume version of enterprise Office that're basically the same. Originally if you activated retail Office with KMS it would use a Mondo license which turned it into volume Office. 8.1 Embedded Industry - choose the Enterprise variant. Massgrave should provide the latest official ISO with Update 3 (Nov 2014 - 9600.17415).
There are update packs available at MDL so that you would be fully updated in a pre-ESU state.
https://forums.mydigitallife.net/posts/1875373/
>last updates from the pack seem to be in Security-Only format tho, instead of Monthly Rollups - probably the author wished to avoid the backported W10 telemetry components
>not that they can be neutralized after installing monthly rollups anyways
>not to mention you'd still have to install the rest of the updates for 8.1 Embedded Industry yourself, so that you could be fully updated to July 2023
Or you can just download WHDownloader and slipstream the updates by yourself with abbodi's WHD-W81UI.
Sure, there are stuff like WSUSOffline, but it has been years since there was a release, and I dunno whether it still effectively fetches the latest updates.

If you feel adventurous, you can run Windows Update yourself on a fresh install, and wait hours and hours for the scan to finish, unless you install the prerequisite updates that will kickstart it a little. You'll be in for a wild ride.
https://wu.krelay.de/en/

>what about muh ESUs like in W7?
8.1 doesn't officially support ESU (even though TSForge can add ESU license data into the system's trusted store - which will at most replace the validation check suppressor function of BypassESU Blue), but you can piggyback on Server 2012 R2 updates up to Oct 2023 with non-ESU updates, and up to at least Oct 2026 with ESU updates (and then see how's things with Premium Assurance - an odd number of people still using Vista with Server 2008 updates don't seem to complain.)
You'll still require BypassESU Blue, especially when it comes to fooling Windows Update into offering Server 2012 R2 updates so that you won't have to check manually in the Update Catalog or the Knowledge Base articles.

Wild guess: it's LTSC that you're using?
There are two approaches - one is installing the Game Bar
winget install 9NZKPSTSNW4P - assuming you have winget installed
>otherwise store.rg-adguard.net, search by ProductID "9NZKPSTSNW4P" and choose "Release" ring instead of RP
>download the latest appx and the dependencies like VCLibs, and install
and the other is just disabling GameDVR from the registry.
reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR /f /t REG_DWORD /v "AppCaptureEnabled" /d 0

Office 365 is rolling release of standalone local Office apps (not to be confused with Microsoft 365 cloud service). Every couple years MS declares feature freeze and that build becomes yet another LTSC.
Office 365 will get security updates forever, but also it will get new features and possibly compatibility breaking changes and UI/UX experiments.

Awesome thanks, I used RDP a couple times before but only to connect as admin to another users machine, did not relaize it would just seamlessly transfer session if I'm connecting as already logged in user instead.
>take the time to properly set it up
???
I enabled one checkbox on the host (and manually specified display resolution on the client) and it just werks. Or are there some tweaks I can and should apply?

shout out to this thread
after years of distro hopping and rarely using an OS for more than 2 years, I came back to the roots for my old ThinkPad that I will use to work
Win 10 IoT LTSC Entreprise is really nice. the bloatware was always a huge turn off for me
partitioned my SSD to store my data plus PortableApps so I can easily transfer my working environment elsewhere when needed. it's kinda cool to rediscover old apps. I will try coding a bit with Notepad++
I think I'm back home bros

I'm wondering if I should install the same Win 10 (or 11) IoT LTSC Entreprise on my desktop that I use mostly for Dota 2, gaming, some video edit. it's a 6 year old machine so I'm wondering if I would get some performance boost from using W11 or not

I'll give you an actual answer - Yori.
http://www.malsmith.net/yori
Cmder (actually the ConEmu part of it - Cmder is actually a software package containing ConEmu, git-bash, clink for cmd, and some in-house additions) is basically a terminal emulator - just like Windows Terminal, Terminus or conhost.
https://www.hanselman.com/blog/whats-the-difference-between-a-console-a-terminal-and-a-shell
>so I can run that as the default
I suppose you can't just replace CMD in the system with it, without fucking up default batch operation that assume exact behavior like under CMD - whether by hijacking cmd.exe with IFEO's Debugger value to open yori.exe instead, or by replacing the value of %ComSpec% env.
But you can make a terminal emulator of your choice load Yori shell as a default task, which is what you might like. Yori's installer should also add its folder to the PATH, so that you can just lauanch "yori.exe" to open the shell, without providing the shell's absolute path.

huge caveat though is that I am NOT getting the regular consumer W11 experience

I use a far more standard version of W11 at the office and it definitely doesn't respect the privacy or intelligence of the people using it

I've been using W10 LTSC 2021 (2019 before it) for years but am now seriously considering switching to 11 LTSC due to an extremely esoteric OS+hardware problem that somehow I am the only one in the world to ever experience, even across multiple builds.
I have 100% narrowed it down to only occur on W10 21h1-22h2 and not W11, nor on W10 LTSC 2019.
Is there any reason not to? I actually like 11's UI more than 10 and it seemed pretty similar when I was testing it.
