Alright OP I assume you're young and full of passion so let me give you my experience over the years. Let's start by answering your question. Go be a tire and lube tech. You'll need basic hand tools, a cheap impact, and large impact grade socket sets. Harbor Freight all your tools and stay off the tool truck. There is zero reason for you to ever set foot on that vehicle.
This is the part of my blog post where I tell you to not fucking do it. This industry does not give a single fuck about it's techs or their livelihoods. There are so many aspects about this industry that are disgusting and awful that it makes you wonder how these guys have been stuck in it for over a decade but here's what you can expect.
>Flat rate pay scale
Flat rate is basically pay per job and they almost NEVER provide enough labor time to actually do the job properly especially in a dealership setting. Wanna pull the entire dashboard out of a 2022 Hyundai Sonata with the entire interior pulled out and every single sensor needing re-calibrated after reinstallation? 5 hours. Welcome to flat rate. Some jobs are gravy, most are a bitch. But we gotta keep those labor times low so we can stay competitive. They reduce the labor time so the customer pays less meaning you'll get paid less because god forbid your shop doesn't charge the customer 200+ an hour per labor hour.
>Shop dynamics
Ass. All your co-workers are either old, jaded, or angry. They're on flat rate too so they ain't gonna teach you shit. If your question can't be answered in a minute you're getting in the way of their already abysmal paycheck. You gotta have a thick skin working in a garage. People in this setting are real and are very cynical. Camaraderie is coated in insults. If nobody is making fun of you then they don't like you.
