They did get re-elected again and there was a right-wing military coup *and* the nationalists fucked it up (at first) and it devolved into a civil war. You can say the assassination of Calvo Sotelo by the Republicans was the trigger, but they'd say that was in retaliation for the assassination of Jose Catillo, who was a cop and that might've been in retaliation for his part in busting up a Falangist rally. Or whatever. The point is this debate is endless because that's in the nature of the thing. I'm not saying it's good to fight a civil war it's just not one-sided like that but a mutually interpenetrating (both philosophically and also literally, with bullets) event that develops through a collision between opposing forces who had their ~reasons~ and was only resolved when one side wiped out the other.
